Released: 1990
The Air Jordan 5 launched in 1990 and took Tinker Hatfield’s creativity to the next level. Drawing inspiration from WWII fighter planes — specifically the shark teeth painted on their noses — the AJ5 introduced a more aggressive look and feel. It was the first Jordan to feature reflective 3M material, translucent rubber outsoles, and a molded ankle collar for better lockdown and support.
Michael Jordan wore the AJ5 during the 1989–90 season, one of his most dominant campaigns. He averaged 33.6 points per game, led the league in scoring, and brought the Bulls to within one game of the NBA Finals — setting the stage for the dynasty to come.

- The Black Metallic 5s became synonymous with Jordan’s raw athleticism and high-flying plays
Cultural Impact
The AJ5 cemented the idea that Jordans weren’t just basketball shoes — they were statements. The 3M tongue flashed under arena lights and cameras, and the icy sole added an edge that screamed future. The Grape colorway stood out with no Bulls connection — just pure fashion flex. That opened the door for lifestyle-first Jordan drops in years to come.
Retros and collabs — like the Off-White AJ5s, Raging Bull pack, and the Bel-Air editions — have made the 5s a permanent part of the sneakerhead canon. They’re bold, they’re loud, and they’re unmistakable — just like MJ in 1990.
