Released: 1992
The Air Jordan 7 was released in 1992 and marked a bold stylistic shift. Still designed by Tinker Hatfield, the AJ7 was heavily inspired by African tribal art, with vibrant geometric patterns and color blocking that pushed boundaries. It was also the first Jordan to completely remove the visible Air unit and external Nike branding, helping to further establish Jordan Brand as its own identity.
MJ wore the AJ7 during one of the most legendary years of his career — winning his second NBA title, second MVP, and a gold medal with the original Dream Team at the Barcelona Olympics.

- Olympic version featured MJ’s #9 jersey number

- 1992 NBA season: Jordan leads Bulls to second straight title, winning MVP and Finals MVP again
- 1992 Olympics: MJ wears the AJ7 “Olympic” as part of the Dream Team — the most dominant squad in history
- Signature games include multiple 40+ point playoff performances, all while rocking the 7s
Cultural Impact
The AJ7 is a favorite among collectors for its bold design, historical significance, and rich colorways like Bordeaux, Raptors, Hare, and Olympic. The “Hare Jordan” campaign featuring Bugs Bunny helped launch a long-lasting connection between Jordan Brand and pop culture.
The Olympic 7s in particular have become symbolic of peak MJ — not just the NBA’s greatest, but a global icon. Retros and collabs have kept the 7 alive, but the original run in 1992 gave us a perfect storm of performance, patriotism, and unforgettable design.
